Anawan Rock - Rehoboth, Massachusetts
You can take a short walk through the woods of Route 44 to the place where King Philip’s War came to a quiet end around a campfire at the edge of the Squanakonk Swamp. Chief Anawan, a Wampanoag sachem, and a small group of his men were captured without a fight by Captain Benjamin Church and his soldiers. During the night when the guard on-duty fell asleep, Anawan escaped into the swamp. Church woke up and discovered his captive gone. Before he could sound an alarm, Anawan returned to the campfire with beaded belts sacred to the tribe. He presented the belts to Church signifying surrender and the end of the war between colonists and indigenous people. Church was so impressed by Anawan’s integrity (and the fact he and his men were still alive when they could have so easily been killed in their sleep) he promised then to protect the chief at all costs upon their arrival in Plymouth. Knowing that Church would fight for Anawan, his superiors ordered him to ride to Boston on a bogus errand. While he was gone, they beheaded Anawan. Capt. Church soon resigned his commission and left Plymouth.
