Uniquely Rehoboth Sights & Embellishments

The cone beckons . . .

The iconic ice cream cone on Route 44 marks Uncle Ed's Front Porch, a favorite destination of residents as well as travelers passing through Rehoboth.  Customers can sit in the quaint ice cream parlor or pick up a cone or sundae to eat outside or take home.   New Englanders are said to consume more ice cream per person, per year than any other region in the country.  We don't know if that's just legend, but it sure seems true.

Rub-a-dub-dub . . .

You'll see this bit of whimsy in front of "Groom & Style" Pet Grooming on Fairview Avenue . The spotlight makes this unique style of advertising visible at night.

Is it a garden shed?

If you grew up in Rehoboth and attended Palmer River School, you'll know this is the "sanitary" behind the one-room Hornbine School.  Every spring third graders from Palmer River spend a day reliving history as students from long ago.  They dress in period clothing, use copy books and slates, eat their lunch from baskets or tin boxes and visit the curiosity known as the sanitary.

From the year 1655,  livestock in Rehoboth were rounded up and kept in a town “pound”  until their owners could claim the wandering beasts.  The Rehoboth Pound (circa 1750) located on Brook Street between School and Wood Streets).  The gate proclaims a biblical passage, Joel 1:18 “How Do the Beasts Groan” and the stone wall enclosure features “permanent” guests.

The “Antiques” Wagon

If you drive down Route 44 going east from the Rehoboth town line, you know this sign. It’s been there for decades in the same place while the objects around it change over the course of time.

“How Do the Beasts Groan?”

Ghostly Activity?

There are numerous stories “floating” around about seeing ghosts in the old Hornbine School.  Whether you see something as you peer through the windows or sense something unusual during a visit inside, you won’t be the first person to speak of such things.

Watch for children in period clothing and listen for the ring of the school bell.
